Frequently Asked Questions

CSA Monitoring for Freight Brokers

Your CSA Questions Answered

What is a CSA score?

The Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA) score ranks motor carriers on safety performance. It combines violation history, crash records, and inspection results. Brokers use CSA scores to assess risk and often require carriers to maintain scores below thresholds.

How often does the system check for CSA updates?

We poll the FMCSA database daily at 3 AM ET, capturing the latest scores for every carrier on your approved list. You'll receive alerts within 1 hour of any score change that crosses your configured threshold.

What triggers an alert?

You set custom thresholds per carrier during onboarding. Most brokers use 70 for risky carriers and 50 for high-volume lanes. When a carrier's score breaches that threshold, you receive an instant email with the carrier's name, new score, and recommended action including their USDOT number.

How are recommended carrier swaps selected?

When a carrier triggers an alert, our system checks your pre-approved list for qualified alternates in the same lane, pricing tier, and capacity range. We rank recommendations by CSA score first, then by on-time performance. You can approve swaps with one click.

Can I customize thresholds?

Yes. Set per-carrier thresholds during setup or change them anytime from the dashboard. Many brokers use 65 for hazmat (strict), 75 for standard (moderate), and 85 for spot loads (loose). You can also segment by region, commodity, or carrier category.

How does it integrate with my TMS?

We connect via REST API to Descartes, Tailwind, 3GLogix, Carrier Manager, and others. We can auto-update carrier risk ratings in your TMS when a CSA breach occurs, or send alerts via email and SMS. Integration setup takes about 15 minutes.

What happens when a carrier's score improves?

When a score drops back below your threshold, we send an optional cleared notification so you know they're compliant again. You can re-enable them for dispatch immediately or keep the restriction in place.

Can I see historical trends?

Yes. The dashboard shows each carrier's CSA trend over the past 12 months. You can also export a CSV of your entire roster with current scores, thresholds, and alerts for your compliance officer.
