# Derek Fontaine, Director of Demand Generation at Clarent (Series B, ~160 employees) — read of Webinar AI, May 7 2026

> 9 years in demand gen, currently owning the webinar program for a B2B compliance software company doing roughly 3 webinars a month on Zoom Webinars, which I am absolutely exhausted by.

## How I got here

Someone in the Demand Gen Geeks Slack dropped this link when the thread was "what are people using instead of ON24 that won't make me cry." I bookmarked it on my phone during my commute (40 minutes, Caltrain, I coach my daughter's U12 soccer team Saturdays so I catch up on work reading on the train). Opened it properly on my laptop Thursday afternoon between two calls.

## What I clicked first

The pricing table. I always go there first. $199/month for unlimited webinars and up to 1,000 attendees is not crazy if it actually works. Our current Zoom Webinars bill is $5,400/year and that's for features I use maybe 40% of. So the math is interesting before I've even read the hero copy.

Then I went back up and read: "Host, record, and convert your audience with the simplest webinar platform built for founders, sales leaders, and marketing teams." Fine. Bland. Then: "From setup to lead capture to replay distribution, everything works out of the box." I've read that sentence on literally every webinar platform. That's not a claim, that's a genre convention.

## Where I paused

The follow-up sequence feature. "Attendees get a thank you email within 5 minutes, the replay link within the hour, and a personalized pitch the next day." That specific sequencing is actually the thing I manually cobble together in Marketo right now, and it takes my coordinator probably 3 hours per webinar to set up correctly. If that's genuinely automated without any configuration, that would matter to me. I sat with it for a minute.

Also paused on the attendance intelligence piece. "See exactly who showed up, when they joined, when they left, and which slides they watched most." We do not have this in Zoom. We get a CSV of attendees and that's basically it. If this is real, it changes how I prioritize post-webinar outreach.

## What I distrusted

The testimonials tanked my trust pretty hard. Sarah Chen is "VP Sales, TechStack Inc." Marcus Williams is "VP Growth, Enterprise SaaS." Lisa Park is "Head of Marketing, B2B SaaS."

Enterprise SaaS. B2B SaaS. Those are not company names. Those are category descriptors. I cannot Google these people. I cannot verify a single one of these quotes. The 40% lead volume increase, the 90% time savings, the 31% conversion rate from attendee to trial, those numbers are impressive if real, but they're attached to ghost companies. If I showed these to my CMO she'd ask me where they came from and I would have no answer.

Also: "Built by Wishdeal Studio" in the footer. Is this a product or an agency project? That's a real question. If I'm paying $199/month for a SaaS subscription I want to know there's an actual team maintaining it, not a studio that built it as a client deliverable and is now running it on the side.

The "Reduce no-shows by 35 percent" claim has no citation. Reduce from what baseline? Whose data? That's the kind of stat that sounds precise but means nothing without a source.

## What would convince me

I want to see the testimonials with real LinkedIn profiles. Not "Sarah Chen, TechStack Inc." I want "Sarah Chen, [real company] — here's her LinkedIn." That alone would move me forward.

I want to see what the actual follow-up email sequence builder looks like inside the product. A screenshot or a 90-second demo of that specific workflow, not the finished output. I want to see how much configuration it actually requires, because "automatic" usually means "automatic after you set up a bunch of stuff."

I want to know if the attendance intelligence dashboard connects to Salesforce in a way where I can see a lead's webinar behavior inside their contact record, not just as a separate report. That's the actual integration I care about. CRM integration as a bullet point tells me nothing about the depth of it.

## What I'd ask in an email reply

1. The testimonials list companies called "Enterprise SaaS" and "B2B SaaS" with no verifiable company names. Can you connect me with an actual customer I can call for 15 minutes before I start a trial?

2. How does the "personalized pitch" in the follow-up sequence actually get personalized? Is it based on attendance duration, which slides they watched, poll responses? What's the actual logic and how much do I configure it?

3. What does "Built by Wishdeal Studio" in the footer mean for how you're structured as a company? Who owns support and product roadmap long-term?

## Verdict: on-the-fence

The pricing is real, the feature set addresses real pain I have right now, and the attendance-to-follow-up automation is genuinely the right problem to solve. But the testimonials with fake-sounding company names are a trust problem I can't get past without more evidence, and the "Built by Wishdeal Studio" footer raises a question I'd need answered before I put a company card down.
