# Kyle Bearden, Owner at Meridian Strength Collective — read of Gym AI, May 8 2026

> 8 years as a trainer, 4 owning a 240-member indie gym in Chattanooga. Mindbody, Google Workspace, and my wife helping with Instagram on weekends.

## How I got here

My buddy Terrence runs a CrossFit affiliate in Knoxville. He texted me the link last Thursday with no context, just "thoughts?" I opened it at a red light on my motorcycle and finished reading it in the parking lot before opening at 5:45. That's the whole story.

## What I clicked first

The hero line "Every member you lose costs you $300 to replace" stopped me cold. Not because it's a revelation -- I know this. But because it's the first number I've seen on any of these tools that matches what I actually feel when someone ghosts after six months. The next line, "Stop chasing the gym. Run it." is a little slick, but I let it slide because the $300 thing earned some goodwill.

## Where I paused

The win-back example copy stopped me: "you were doing five sessions a week before the holidays." That's a real sentence. That's not a template, that's something I would actually write to someone if I had the time to look up their history and the brain space to care about phrasing. I sat with that one for a minute. If the output actually sounds like that and not like a MailChimp drip, it might be worth $79.

The 38% open rate claim on win-back sequences versus 11% for "generic gym broadcast emails" is the kind of stat that either means something or is completely made up. I couldn't tell which. No methodology, no sample size, no timeframe. But the specificity of it -- not 40%, not 35%, exactly 38 -- made me read the section twice instead of skimming it.

## What I distrusted

The testimonials are doing a lot of heavy lifting and they feel thin. Sarah K., Marcus T., Priya M. No photos in the text, no last names, no way to find these people on Google or Instagram or anywhere. Marcus says he saved $440 in dues in one week. That's very specific and also very convenient. One week is not retention. That's one good week. I want to know if those two members are still there six months later.

"800+ studio owners" appears in a small badge under the hero with zero context. 800 is an odd number to stop at if you're rounding. If it's a real number, show me something around it. A map. A quote count. A year the company launched. Right now it reads like a placeholder that never got updated.

The waiver generator concerns me more than anything else on the page. "State-aware language across all 50 US states" is a real liability claim. I had an attorney review my current waiver two years ago and she spent three hours on it. The idea that a tool generates one in 15 minutes that another attorney reads and calls "solid" -- I'd want to know that attorney's name, their state, and what specifically they reviewed. Priya's testimonial is the weakest one on the page for that reason.

## What would convince me

I want to see one gym owner's retention rate over a 12-month period, before and after. Not "caught three at-risk members in week one." Show me February 2025 churn versus February 2026 for a studio that's been on the product the whole time. That's the only number that matters for a retention tool.

On the voice thing: show me a side-by-side. An email a real owner sent, and what Gym AI drafted after training on five of their emails. If those two things read as coming from the same person, I'm sold on that feature.

## What I'd ask in an email reply

1. When you say Gym AI "reads attendance history, membership tier, and billing status" from Mindbody -- what data does your company actually store, and where? My members' payment history is not something I hand over without understanding the contract.

2. The waiver generator: are you working with licensed attorneys in each state, or is this an LLM generating legal language? Those are very different products and I need to know which one I'm buying.

3. You mention Mindbody, Zen Planner, ClubReady, and ABC Fitness. I'm on Mindbody. What specifically does the integration pull, and is it read-only or does Gym AI ever write back to my Mindbody account?

## Verdict: on-the-fence

The retention radar and win-back copy concepts are the first AI gym tool ideas I've seen that solve a problem I actually have, not a problem someone assumed I have. But the testimonials are too clean, the legal claims are too casual, and I don't know yet what I'm agreeing to with my member data. I'd send the email.
