# Rick Morales, Owner/PM at Morales Brothers Construction — read of ContractorAI, May 8 2026

> 14 years running a residential and light-commercial GC shop in the Phoenix metro. 6 guys on crew, 2 regular subs, 1 part-time office person. Coach my daughter's U12 soccer on Saturdays so Friday afternoons are untouchable.

## How I got here

Somebody posted a link in the Arizona Builders Facebook group with the comment "this might actually be useful." I've clicked maybe a dozen of these over the past two years and closed most of them inside 90 seconds. I had 12 minutes before a site walk so I actually read this one.

## What I clicked first

The hero pulled me in just enough to scroll. "ContractorAI handles estimates, change orders, and subcontractor coordination so you can spend your time building, not buried in paperwork." That sentence is exactly how I'd describe my problem to somebody at a bar. It's not dressed up. I kept reading.

The three stats right below it -- "73% Faster Estimates, 2x Bid Volume, $0 Missed Change Orders" -- immediately made me suspicious. Faster than what baseline? 2x bid volume compared to who? Those numbers are doing the heavy lifting for a claim that never gets sourced.

## Where I paused

The change order section. Specifically: "Change orders that were never formally written cost GCs an average of twelve percent of project margin each year." I paused because that number is so close to right that it's either from a real study or it was written to sound like one. I've lost money on verbal COs. Probably more than 12%. But I couldn't tell if this was a stat from NAHB or a number somebody made up to sound authoritative, and there's no footnote, no link, nothing. That's a tell.

## What I distrusted

The testimonials. Derek S. Linda M. James K. These are real common names with no last names, no company names, no city beyond a state. "General Contractor, Colorado" is not a person, it's a composite sketch. I've seen this pattern on every SaaS homepage that launched in the last three years. It doesn't mean the product is bad. It means they either don't have real customers yet or they couldn't get a real customer to go on record, and both of those are things I'd want to know before handing over my job data.

Also the FAQ. The last question literally cuts off mid-sentence: "What if I exceed my plan's project count." That's a sloppy copy-paste miss that nobody caught. Small thing. Slightly annoying when you're asking me to trust you with my job files.

"Marcus R., 22-Year General Contractor, Pacific Northwest" is positioned as a pull quote but reads like a LinkedIn post written by a founder who wanted to sound humble.

## What would convince me

One contractor I could actually look up. A real company name, a real website, a real person who picked up the phone and said yes you can use my name. That's it. That's the whole thing. I don't need a case study PDF. I need one Derek who is Derek Simmons of Simmons Remodeling in Denver, not Derek S.

Also: a real before/after. Show me one actual estimate PDF that came out of the tool, even redacted. Show me what the change order form looks like. I'm a visual person. I need to see the product before I trust the stats.

## What I'd ask in an email reply

1. Who is Derek S. in Colorado? Can I get on a 10-minute call with him? I'm not trying to be difficult, I just want to know someone real is using this on real jobs.

2. The AI estimate builder -- when I upload a scope document, does it pull from a national cost database like RSMeans or does it only use my own saved rates? Because if it's guessing at material prices from a database I haven't validated, I need to know that before I send a bid.

3. QuickBooks integration is listed as Builder tier only. If I'm on Crew, can I export to a format that imports clean into QBO, or am I re-entering everything manually?

## Verdict: on-the-fence

The problems they describe are exactly my problems, and the pricing is honest compared to what Buildertrend charges me for features I don't use. But I can't verify a single claim on this page and the testimonials feel assembled rather than collected. I'd send the email.
